Current.tv Makes Its Big Debut.

October 7th, 2005

At the kick off event for current.tv, the new cable and satellite interactive television network, Al Gore spoke at length about the decay of the public forum, the role of television as the most prevalent provider of information in America, and the people’s rights and responsibilities to regain control of our national dialogue through the use of interactive technologies.

Television excludes individuals because of its cost, so only the wealthy are able to participate through the purchase of expensive television advertising and programming. Although it is the most accessible form of information, it is also only accessible in one direction. There is no true interactivity.

Current.tv is a dialogue more than it is a network. Viewers login to the site to upload, review, and vote on material that they think should be included on the network’s lineup. Shows typically range from 3 to 10 minutes and topics vary from the current political climate in Iraq to drive through daiquiri joints in Louisiana. Most of its shorts are "viewer-created content", either short digital films or flash animations.

Al Gore is my new hero. It’s a cool idea and I hope it works. If it does, it will change the face of interactivity and media experience in this country, making people feel connected and in control. And if it doesn’t- well, there’s always The Daily Show.

For those of you wanting to read the entire speech it can be viewed here.

Sept 16th, 2005

Gwangju is a city located south coast of Korea. This city is famous for the political massacre that happened in 1980 and often known for their fighting spirits. ( > Read here more about Gwangju Massacre) A random but related thought: How about New Orleans Design Biennale after rebuilding it? Anyway...

Gwangju means 'city of light' and this city of light has held International Art Biennale like Venice over a decade. Awareness for design has risen over years in Asia and for its significances, Gwangju is helding International Design Biennale, "Light into Life" by inviting 84 artists/designers from 25 countries to present and interact with.

"HearWear: The Fashion of Environmental Noise Display" has been invited to participate in the Main Exhibition, "Future Life" along with other world renowned designers. HearWear team(Milena & Younghui) is showing 2 new prototypes of their design of fashion technology.

Well, this is more about information than thoughts but, pretty cool... check it out at http://www.design-biennale.org

Product placement in films now games.

August 11th, 2005

Are you paying attention? If you are you can't help but notice all the products being place in Sci-Fi movies like i,robot and The Island. I not only got a vision of the future but also had this uncontrollable urge to buy a pair of Pumas. Reminds me of the Blade Runner days when we knew Atari was forever. Films are one thing, but I see now products are being place in games. I love being moved by films, inspired to compete by games, but now I also have to leave my credit cards locked up at home. Well there is still popcorn and discussing at Starbucks.

Pro Game League on Cable Network TV in Korea.

August 10th, 2005

screenshot of www.ongamenet.com
Some of you already heard about top pro league PC game players making 6 digit salary in South Korea and some of you may heard of 24 hr Go channel in Korean cable TV. Have you heard of 24 hr game tournament channel then?

When I was traveling Korea this May, as I was going through TV channels (as I'm always more interested in what other channels are playing), I stumbled on 24 hour Game channel where dual tournament was being broadcasted live. They were playing Star Craft while 2 commentators talking in the background. The TV screen shows the screen of both players' game screens and the shot of game players who were deeply focused in game to win.

Followings are interesting sites: www.ongamenet.com, where you can download VOD archived games and www.WCG 2005 where you can see the list of Official Games such as 'Counter Strike': 'Source', 'FIFA Soccer 2005', 'Need for Speed', 'StarCraft': 'Brood War', 'WarCraft III': 'The Frozen Throne and Warhammer 40,000' : 'Dawn of War'. (sorry about Korean!)

ICE - put it on your cell phones.

August 9th, 2005

Three letters that could make all the difference. Posted all over UNICEF since the London attacks is a special bulletin. ICE - In Case of Emergency. Part of a campaign to have everyone set up an emergency contact in their cell phones, under the name ICE. When you are not concious (but hopefully still alive), ICE would enable people to contact your chosen one....without having to wait till you wake up (or not). Such a simple concept, the person who thought of it should be given an award. Please tell all your friends. It definitely deserves as much proliferation as LOL.

Oh yes...and let's say you have more than one loved one...ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 would also work :-) Read more about ICE from MSNBC.

Webcasting and Embracing the Borg in me.

August 9th, 2005

I knew it was only a matter of time, but didn't realize resistance was so futile I would begin it before G5 laptops were even available. I enjoy webcasting and absolutely recommend to any group trying to construct and build an interactive piece together. Absolutely helps when partnering across the coasts or overseas. Just can't get away from feeling like 7 of 9 as I communicate by headset, chat, and moving through images on the computer together. I'll always miss those meetings in the conference room. Of course that's though that's so '94.

Games in the Classroom.

August 5th, 2005

All interested parties should know about and be in conversations around the History and Civics Initiative. The classroom environments are changing. Here's a chance to participate in making that change for the better. Organizations that have the best understanding on how to urge students to use their millennium skills to explore and embrace Historical stories will have the best chance at making a difference. You've got until November. If you haven't already, start preparing now!

IPTV: What's it all about?

August 1st, 2005

At this year's American Film Institute's Digital Content Festival, one of the most anticipated presentations was SBC Communications' Senior Vice President Amy Friedlander's. 'IPTV' was the buzzword of the day, bringing about lots of hand rubbing and excited gesticulation among the interactive and digital media folks in the room. So what is IPTV and why is it being heralded as the future of interactive TV programming? Click here for my notes on IPTV.
